The Complete Men's Hair Texture Routine — From Wash to Finish

Great hair texture isn't about one product — it's about using the right products in the right order. Whether you're starting from scratch or refining what you already do, this routine gives you a repeatable system for textured, styled hair every day.

Why Texture Is the Foundation of Every Great Men's Style

Most men focus on hold — how long a style stays in place. But texture is what makes a style look intentional in the first place. Texture creates separation, volume, and dimension. Without it, even a well-cut hairstyle can look flat and unfinished.

The goal of a texture routine is to build from a clean base, layer products strategically, and finish with something that holds the shape you want.

Step 1: Prep — Wash and Towel Dry

  • Use a quality shampoo and conditioner suited to your hair type. Don't skip conditioner — it keeps hair manageable and prevents the dryness that comes from salt and clay products over time.
  • Towel dry until hair is about 70% dry. Damp hair is the ideal starting point for most texture products.
  • If you use heat tools, apply a heat protectant before blow drying.

Step 2: Build Base Texture

This is where you establish the foundation of your style.

Option A — For volume and lift:
Apply Palma Texturizing Powder to dry hair at the roots. Work it in with your fingertips for instant lift and grip. Learn how to apply texturizing powder.

Option B — For wave and movement:
Spray Palma Sea Salt Spray evenly through damp hair. Scrunch upward and air dry or diffuse. This sets the wave pattern before you add any hold product. Learn how to use sea salt spray.

You can also combine both — sea salt spray on damp hair, then texturizing powder once dry for maximum volume and texture.

Step 3: Define and Hold

Once your base texture is set, apply your hold product.

Take a small amount of Palma 2-in-1 Clay & Pomade — about the size of a pea — warm it between your palms, and work it through the hair from roots to ends. Style with your fingers or a comb into your desired shape. Not sure which to use? Read our Clay vs. Pomade guide.

The clay gives you grip and structure; the pomade component keeps it pliable so you can adjust through the day.

Step 4: Finish and Maintain

  • Once styled, leave it alone. Touching hair too much breaks up the texture you've built.
  • For touch-ups mid-day, a light spritz of sea salt spray or a fingertip of clay & pomade is enough to reshape.
  • Not sure what finish to aim for? See our guide on matte vs. shine hair products.
